Progress and Application of Hydrogen Energy Technology

Feb 28, 2025

As clean energy, hydrogen is increasingly used worldwide. Fullcryo provides solutions for hydrogen production, liquefaction, storage, and transport, promoting a greener future.

1. Why is hydrogen energy so popular?

According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), energy demand continues to rise globally as industrialization and urbanization accelerate. At the current rate of mining and consumption of traditional fossil energy, these fossil energy sources will gradually dry up in the next few decades to more than a hundred years. Therefore, it is crucial to seek clean and sustainable alternative energy sources. Among many options, hydrogen energy has become the focus because of its unique advantages.

Unlike traditional energy sources such as coal, oil and natural gas, the process of obtaining hydrogen energy has zero carbon emissions, almost no pollution, and only produces water, which is why hydrogen energy is called green energy. Moreover, since hydrogen energy can be easily stored and transported, it makes up for the intermittent problems of other energy sources (such as solar energy and wind energy) and provides stable support during peak energy demand periods. It is worth mentioning that hydrogen has a very high energy density, which will help solve the problem of future energy shortages because hydrogen can store and release more energy than other energy sources under the same mass, releasing stronger power.

2. Application cases of hydrogen energy in different fields

(1) Transportation

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have the characteristics of zero emissions, short hydrogen refueling time, and long driving range, which have significant advantages in long-distance transportation. In the field of transportation, hydrogen energy is currently being used more and more widely in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen-powered trains, ships and aviation. For example, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles such as Toyota Mirai and Hyundai NEXO have been launched in many countries. During the 2022 Winter Olympics, 212 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were put into use as public transportation in Beijing. The world’s first commercial hydrogen-powered train has been put into operation in Germany, Austria and other places, with a range of about 1,000 kilometers. MF Hydra launched by Norway is the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry. In the future, hydrogen-powered ships are also continuing to develop. Hydrogen energy transportation is currently facing many challenges in infrastructure, cost, technology and other aspects during large-scale promotion, but with technological progress, cost reduction and improvement of infrastructure, it is still expected to usher in wider application and help facilitate travel.

(2) Industrial application

Compared with other fields, the industrial sector has a large demand for hydrogen. Hydrogen energy is most widely used in the industrial sector, with relatively mature technology and more complete infrastructure. At present, there is a fairly mature industrial system for production, storage, and transportation. In fact, the widespread application of hydrogen energy in the industrial field is still inseparable from policy and market drivers. Countries around the world have formulated carbon neutrality-related policies and goals, and many companies in high-energy-consuming industries use hydrogen energy to deploy low-carbon solutions.

The current large-scale demand for hydrogen covers the refining, chemical, and steel industries. For example, hydrogen energy is used in the desulfurization process during the refining process to reduce the content of pollutants and further improve air quality. Hydrogen energy, as a clean fuel or reducing agent, helps high-energy-consuming industries such as steel and chemicals achieve decarbonization goals. Hydrogen energy is gradually replacing traditional fuels such as coke, natural gas, and oil, reducing carbon emissions and improving the quality of industrial products and manufacturing efficiency.

(3) Energy Storage

In terms of electricity production, hydrogen power generation is usually divided into two methods: fuel cells and direct combustion. Many countries have built hydrogen power plants to assist in power supply. For example, South Korea’s H2 power plant, as the world’s largest large hydrogen fuel cell power plant (50MW), provides clean electricity generation for the Seoul area. Hydrogen power generation is more efficient. The Kawasaki City Hydrogen Power Plant in Japan and the German “Hydrogen Natural Gas Mixed Combustion” project both use hydrogen power supply to reduce some energy losses. In terms of energy storage, hydrogen energy is often used as a backup power source for energy supply in remote areas, islands, military bases and other areas without power grids or unstable power grids. Among them, the Antarctic power supply project uses wind power to produce hydrogen to provide stable power supply for scientific research stations.

3. Current status and challenges of green hydrogen production

The production of hydrogen currently relies mainly on two methods. Hydrogen produced from traditional fossil fuels is called “grey hydrogen”, while hydrogen produced from renewable energy is called “green hydrogen” (i.e. green hydrogen). The “grey hydrogen” production method has lower costs but higher carbon emissions. The green hydrogen production process is environmentally friendly and produces almost no carbon emissions, so it is regarded as the future development direction. However, due to the high cost, the market share of green hydrogen is still small, and large-scale application is still limited. Over the years, Fullcryo has continuously innovated, improved the maturity of technology, actively laid out hydrogen industry bases, and promoted the upgrading of the entire hydrogen energy industry chain. We use abundant renewable energy, especially photovoltaic hydrogen production technology, which not only significantly reduces the cost of green hydrogen, but also reduces carbon footprint, contributing to global environmental protection.

4. Technological progress in hydrogen storage and transportation

The storage and transportation of hydrogen is mainly divided into three methods: high-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage (35MPa, 70MPa), cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage (-253℃), and solid hydrogen storage (alloy adsorption). Among them, gaseous hydrogen storage is more mature, which is reflected in hydrogen refueling stations and on-board hydrogen storage. Due to the limited storage density of gaseous hydrogen, the emergence of cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage technology makes up for this shortcoming. The density of liquid hydrogen is about 800 times that of gaseous hydrogen. Under the same hydrogen storage volume, the storage capacity can be greatly increased.

Fullcryo provides advanced liquid hydrogen technology solutions, which can greatly save hydrogen storage and transportation and operating costs and ensure safety. In the field of transportation, the gaseous hydrogen transportation provided by Fullcryo covers traditional long-tube trailers and cylinder transportation, as well as the construction of hydrogen pipeline networks, and is committed to providing customized services for different customers. Fullcryo provides professional Dewar flask liquid hydrogen transportation, providing customers with various specifications and models of cryogenic storage tanks according to the amount of gas used.
