Noble gases: Multi-functional and Useful

Dec 12, 2024

1.Key Benefits

Chemical Stability:

Noble gases are chemically stable because the number of electrons in their outermost layers is stable (usually 8, helium 2), which makes it extremely difficult for them to react chemically with other elements. This stability is the basis for their wide range of applications in many fields.

Physical Properties:

Noble gases have a unique set of physical properties, such as low boiling points, low densities, high thermal conductivity, etc., which give them irreplaceable advantages in specific applications.

2.Main applications

Protective gas:

Inert gases (such as argon) are commonly used as shielding gases during welding and cutting processes to prevent the weld area from being oxidized by oxygen in the air.

Inert gases are also used to protect products from contamination during precision manufacturing processes such as semiconductors and optical glass.

Illumination and displays:

Neon is widely used in the production of neon lights and indicators because of its unique luminescent properties.

In modern display technology, noble gases are also used in the manufacture of plasma and LED displays.

Medical and scientific research:

Helium is used for cooling superconducting magnets in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to its low density and high thermal conductivity.

Noble gases are also used in scientific research, such as as heavy atoms or anomalous scatterers in protein structure determination (e.g. xenon and krypton in protein crystallography).

Aerospace:

Helium is widely used to fill balloons and airships because of its safety (non-flammable and non-explosive).

In space exploration, noble gases are also used to maintain stable air pressure and temperature inside space capsules.

Noble gases: Multi-functional and Useful

Industrial Applications:

Inert gases play an important role in metal smelting and processing to protect metals from oxidation.

In the electronics industry, they are used in the manufacture of vacuum devices and semiconductor devices.

Energy sector:

Liquid helium is used in refrigeration technology, e.g. for cooling superconducting materials, because of its extremely low boiling point.

In the field of nuclear energy, noble gases are also used for monitoring and detecting nuclear radiation.

Environmental protection:

Noble gases also play an important role in groundwater research, where paleo climate and paleo environmental information can be inferred by measuring the amount of noble gases in groundwater.

3.Diffferent types of noble gases:

3.1 Helium

Helium is the English word for helium, which comes from the Greek word meaning “sun”. 1868, when Jensen of France observed the surface of the sun with a spectroscope, he found a new yellow spectral line, and through the research and observation of many scientists, he found an unknown element belonging to the sun, and so he named it Helium. Helium, and the element symbol was designated as He.

3.2 Neon

Neon is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic gas at room temperature and pressure, and appears orange-red when discharged. Neon is most commonly used in neon lights. The world’s first neon light was made of neon gas (the original English meaning of neon is “neon light”). The red light emitted by neon lamps is highly transmissive in the air and can pass through dense fog. Therefore, neon lights are often used in airports, harbors, and land and water transportation lines on the light sign.

3.3 Argon

Argon is a colorless, odorless and non-toxic gas at room temperature and pressure, it is non-combustible, non-corrosive and slightly soluble in water and organic solvents. Argon gas will be ionized after irradiation by high-energy cosmic rays. Using this principle, can be set in the artificial Earth satellite is filled with argon counter. When the satellite is flying in the cosmic space, the argon gas is irradiated by cosmic rays. The stronger the irradiation, the stronger the ionization of argon. The radio on the satellite automatically sends these ionization signals back to Earth, so that people can determine the location and intensity of the cosmic radiation belts in space according to the size of the signals.

3.4 Krypton

Krypton is colorless, odorless and tasteless, just like other noble gases, it is chemically very inactive and not easy to produce chemical interactions with other substances, it is orange-red in color when discharged, and can be separated from liquid air by fractional distillation, krypton’s multiple spectral lines make the ionized krypton gas discharge tubes white, and electric bulbs injected with krypton gas are a very bright white source of light and are commonly used in the production of fluorescent lamps.

3.5 Xenon

Xenon is a colorless, odorless and non-toxic gas at room temperature and pressure, and does not burn. Xenon is valued in medicine as an anesthetic. Xenon can dissolve in cytoplasmic oils, causing anesthesia and swelling of cells, thus temporarily stopping the action of nerve endings. Gas mixtures consisting of 80% xenon and 20% oxygen have been tried as an anesthetic without side effects. Xenon also has a high degree of ultraviolet radiation and can be used in medical technology. In the atomic energy industry, xenon can be used to test the presence of high-speed particles, particles, mesons, etc.
