How Cryogenic Technology Power Modern Industries?

Oct 13, 2025

The development of Cryogenic technology has never ceased. This technology, which centers on placing different materials and elements at extremely low temperatures (typically below -180°C or 93.2K), has had a profound impact on numerous industries.

Definition of Cryogenic technology

Cryogenic technology is the process of placing materials or elements in an extremely low-temperature environment through specific means. This process is not merely a simple cooling process, but rather a precise regulation of the thermodynamic state of substances.

Under low-temperature conditions, the physical and chemical properties of substances will undergo significant changes, such as electrical conductivity, density, and chemical reactivity. It is precisely these changes in characteristics that have enabled cryogenic technology to be widely applied in various industries.

Application of Cryogenic technology

Cryogenic technology in the food industry

In fact, food preservation is the most important application field of low-temperature freezing technology. Since the emergence of low-temperature freezing technology, it has been regarded as the most efficient method for food freezing at present. It can keep food fresh to the greatest extent and extend its shelf life.

At the same time, freeze-drying technology has also been widely applied. This technology first freezes the product, then reduces the pressure and heats it, causing the frozen water in the material to vaporize instantly, thereby achieving dehydration and preservation without damaging the structure of the food.

In addition to refrigeration systems, low-temperature applications in the food industry also include the use of liquid nitrogen to cool trays, as well as common equipment such as dewar flasks and filling stations. These low-temperature devices jointly ensure the low-temperature requirements during the food production and processing.

Cryogenic technology in the medical industry

In the medical field, the application of cryogenic technology is ubiquitous. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment relies on low-temperature substances (mainly liquid helium) as superconducting materials to achieve high-precision imaging effects. This process is accomplished by using a helium refrigerator.

Cryotherapy is another important application direction. This non-invasive surgery removes the diseased tissue by placing the diseased cells at a freezing temperature. For certain types of tumors, cryosurgery can not only effectively reduce the tumor volume but also minimize damage to the surrounding normal tissues to the greatest extent.

In terms of life support, cryopreservation technology offers a reliable solution for tissue storage, such as the preservation of blood cells, stem cells and embryos. At this point, cryogenic dewar flasks are used to store liquid nitrogen in an environment of approximately -135°C, enabling medical institutions to conveniently and continuously obtain cryogenic substances.

The pharmaceutical industry also cannot do without the support of cryogenic technology. Freeze-drying technology is widely used in the production processes of vaccines, sera, antibiotics and biotechnology products. It utilizes low-temperature substances (usually liquid nitrogen) to remove moisture without altering or damaging the materials.

Cryogenic technology in the aerospace industry

The aerospace industry not only widely applies cryogenic technology, but it can even be said that without cryogenic technology, the development of the aerospace field would be a completely different scene. Cryogenic gas is used as fuel, while liquid helium is employed to cool the detector, enabling it to conduct high-precision measurements in space.

Cryogenic rocket engines are one of the landmark applications in the aerospace field. They use cryogenic fuels and oxidants, typically consisting of liquid oxygen (-183°C) and liquid hydrogen (-253°C). This technology was first applied to the renowned American “Atlas Centauri” rocket and made significant contributions to the successful moon landing of NASA’s “Saturn V” rocket.

Cryogenic technology in the field of scientific research

Scientific research was one of the earliest fields to attempt cryogenic technology. Today, cryogenic technology remains an important cutting-edge tool for promoting scientific research progress. Superconductivity is one of the cutting-edge scientific phenomena related to low-temperature freezing. It makes it possible to construct super-strong magnetic fields, such as the magnets used in particle accelerators, and is also applied in innovative energy storage technologies and cable power transmission projects.

In astrophysical research, cryogenic freezing technology also plays a key role. For instance, in the detection experiments of cosmic microwave radiation (CMB), this thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang can only be detected by ultra-sensitive instruments operating at temperatures close to absolute zero (-273.15°C).

In addition, cryogenic engineering also plays a significant role in the research of new sustainable energy sources, including green hydrogen research with broad application prospects, providing a new direction for the energy transition of various industries.

Cryogenic technology in the transportation industry

The transportation industry is one of the key areas for the development of new applications of liquid gases. Cryogenic technology is bringing about changes to the transportation industry in multiple aspects. In the automotive field, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and their associated hydrogen refueling stations have become a feasible alternative to fossil fuels.

For instance, the “Mini Hydrogen-powered” car launched by BMW in 2001 is regarded as one of the earliest liquid hydrogen-powered vehicles. At present, an increasing number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have emerged in the market, mainly adopting hydrogen fuel cell technology. At the same time, certain operations in the manufacturing and maintenance of automobiles also require low-temperature substances, such as leakage detection and thermal fitting. Liquid nitrogen is used to make engine components contract and then inserted, and after they expand, a tight assembly is achieved.

The shipping industry is also actively attempting to apply cryogenic technology. From methanol-fueled ships to liquefied natural gas (LNG) -powered vessels, the shipping industry is constantly exploring cryogenic technologies to break away from its reliance on fossil fuels and seek environmentally friendly alternatives. LNG is currently widely supplied and is regarded as a more sustainable fuel than ordinary diesel, mainly used in trucks and cargo ships.

How liquid gas reaches the cryogenic application

Industrial gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, helium and hydrogen are usually produced in gaseous form, and the specific production methods vary depending on the type of gas. For instance, our hydrogen supply from Fullcryo is produced through industrial tail gas, which is purified and adsorbed by VPSA equipment into high-purity hydrogen. Subsequently, it undergoes low-temperature liquefaction to ultimately form liquid hydrogen. Argon, oxygen and nitrogen are produced in air separation equipment. Helium is extracted from the Boil off gas in LNG due to its uniqueness as a rare gas. Liquid helium is then produced through a helium liquefier cryogenic equipment.

After production is completed, the gas from Fullcryo can be stored in gaseous form or liquefied through a cryogenic liquefer. Cryogenic liquefied air can be stored in specific cryogenic storage tanks and then transported to all parts of the world by cryogenic semi-trailers. Because the volume of liquid gas is much smaller than that of gaseous gas, this greatly enhances the efficiency of liquefaction storage and transportation. Subsequently, the liquid gas is transported to the end users in cryogenic storage tanks by ship or truck.
