Green Manufacturing: Using Industrial Gases to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Oct 05, 2025

As countries around the world have successively set carbon neutrality goals, traditional manufacturing industries, which once emitted the most carbon, have fallen into an urgent need for zero-carbon reduction. In this process, industrial gases have gradually been proven to be a key force in reducing carbon emissions. The application of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide not only optimizes the process flow, but also plays a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint.

1. Industrial CO₂

For a long time, carbon dioxide has been regarded as the main source of greenhouse gas emissions. However, with the development of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology, this “environmental burden” is gradually transforming into a valuable industrial resource.

Cameron Hepburn, the dean of the Smith Business School and the School of the Environment at the University of Oxford and one of the lead authors of the study, pointed out: “The removal of greenhouse gases is crucial for achieving net-zero carbon emissions and stabilizing the climate.” Our pace of reducing emissions is still not fast enough, so we still need to start absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere now. Although governments and enterprises around the world have taken actions, the pace remains rather slow.

Carbon capture and reuse: By capturing carbon dioxide and applying it to synthetic fuels, chemical production, and even as a concrete hardener, a closed loop of “emission – utilization” is formed. This is an important direction for reducing carbon emissions.

Direct Air capture (DAC) : This approach offers another new path to achieving net zero. This technology captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through low-temperature separation and solvent absorption, providing a supplementary solution for industries that have difficulty reducing emissions.

2. High-purity Industrial Oxygen

In high-energy-consuming industries such as cement, glass, and steel manufacturing, energy consumption is often directly linked to carbon emissions.

Introducing high-purity industrial oxygen during the combustion process can not only significantly enhance combustion efficiency but also reduce harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide and particulate matter. In addition, the use of oxygen in petrochemical refineries helps improve hydrocarbon reforming and partial oxidation processes, thereby producing more fuel and reducing emissions.

Take glass production as an example. Equips VPSA oxygen generators on site can achieve cleaner and more controllable combustion. This not only helps increase glass output but is also the main reason why the glass industry is increasingly adopting oxygen-enriched technology.

To supply high-purity oxygen on a large scale, industrial gas producers play a significant role in the distribution and supply management of oxygen in various industries. They can provide oxygen of different purity grades and customize solutions according to the needs of various industries. And building an on-site air separation oxygen production plant might be a better choice.

For instance, Fullcryo has upgraded its combustion system with advanced oxygen-enriched combustion technology and assisted the steel manufacturing industry in investing in the construction of two 1100Nm³/h VPSA oxygen generation units, achieving an oxygen purity of 93%.

3.Cryogenic Liquid Nitrogen

Whether it is nitrogen or cryogenic liquid nitrogen, they have both advanced the process of green manufacturing by enhancing the safety and controllability of production. The inert nature of industrial nitrogen makes it an ideal auxiliary gas in many industrial scenarios.

Inert protection and coverage: Nitrogen is used to prevent metal oxidation, which can extend the service life of equipment and reduce the scrap rate.

Wastewater treatment: Nitrogen is used to remove oxygen from pipelines and storage tanks, thereby preventing corrosion.

The value of cryogenic liquid nitrogen in low-temperature application fields is equally prominent. It is used in food quick-freezing, pharmaceutical cold chain and low-temperature grinding in the electronics industry, reducing the use of chemicals. As a refrigerant, liquid nitrogen can quickly freeze food and is also used in medical research and the preservation of experimental subjects in reproductive technology.

There are three ways to supply industrial nitrogen:

  1. Renting on-site nitrogen tanks and having them transported by the company.
  2. Using high-pressure gas cylinders to transport nitrogen.
  3. Using nitrogen generators to prepare nitrogen by oneself through compressed air.

Among them, on-site nitrogen generation not only reduces emissions during transportation but also has the advantages of no transportation costs or delays, no risk of low-temperature storage, and no evaporation loss or waste caused by the inability to completely empty and recycle high-pressure gas cylinders. Fullcryo can provide nitrogen supply equipment with different production capacities.

4. Industrial Hydrogen

Industrial hydrogen is hailed as the energy of the future. With the global demand for green energy growing, hydrogen is moving from concept to practical application and has become a key breakthrough for deep decarbonization.

Green steel: Industries such as steel, cement, and chemicals are major emitters of carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen can replace fossil fuels in these high-energy-consuming production processes, achieving significant emission reduction.

Clean fuel: Forklifts and trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells have been applied in factory logistics, and hydrogen fuel cells are being explored for use in heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses and trains, making them an ideal choice for long-distance transportation applications.

Chemical raw materials: Green hydrogen in the chemical industry can replace grey hydrogen to achieve low-carbon chemical synthesis. At present, green hydrogen is mainly used as a component or catalyst in ammonia production, petroleum refining and methanol production. These three major processes constitute the main uses of hydrogen production.

Energy storage: Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are intermittent and cannot always generate electricity when needed. Green hydrogen can capture excess electricity and convert it into hydrogen for power generation or other applications.

With the growth in demand for green hydrogen energy, its production cost has continued to decline. Meanwhile, an increasing number of enterprises and governments are setting carbon neutrality goals and introducing measures to encourage energy diversification.

Fullcryo has leading capabilities in the design and manufacture of hydrogen liquefaction units in China and can provide global customers with a complete set of liquid hydrogen storage and transportation solutions that directly reach end users. Through technologies such as green hydrogen purification, hydrogen liquefaction, and liquid hydrogen storage and transportation, a continuous supply of green hydrogen has been achieved, making it a provider of green hydrogen production and comprehensive application services.

5. Industrial Argon Gas

Argon (Ar), an inert gas, is widely used in welding and high-precision manufacturing. Its chemical properties are stable, which can provide a clean and controllable environment for industrial processes and indirectly contribute to green production.

Metal welding: Industrial argon is used as a shielding gas in welding processes such as MIG welding and TIG welding. By isolating the welding area from the surrounding air, liquid argon helps prevent oxidation, ensuring that the weld seam is smooth, clean and durable.

Additive manufacturing:  industrial argon gas has been widely applied in high-tech fields such as 3D printing and laser cutting. These technologies require precise and stable environments. Liquid argon ensures process reliability and product quality in high-tech fields.

Metal refining: Argon is used in the deoxidation and decarburization processes of steel production to improve the quality of steel. Meanwhile, argon provides a safe and controllable atmosphere, preventing the formation of harmful compounds that could harm workers and the surrounding environment.

With the continuous innovation and exploration of new applications in various industries, the future prospects of industrial argon gas are broad. With the development of automated manufacturing, the demand for high-purity gases such as argon is expected to continue to grow.

6. Electronic Special Gases

High-purity gases are indispensable in fields such as semiconductors, medicine, aerospace, and electronic specialty gases.

As the technology industry’s demand for clean energy and carbon reduction increases, the importance of high-purity gases is becoming more and more prominent. Among them, electronic specialty gases are widely used in the matching of integrated circuit lithography machines, OLED display panel manufacturing processes, cleaning processes and etching processes in integrated circuit manufacturing, etc.
