Common Types of Industrial Gases and Their Applications

Dec 06, 2024

What are industrial gases?

Industrial gases are the “blood” of industrial manufacturing, metallurgy, chemical industry, medicine, foodstuffs, etc. In the on-site gas supply project of bulk industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.), Fullcryo innovatively applies the large-scale cryogenic equipment technology to the industrial gas process engineering and equipment manufacturing, in order to reduce the energy consumption and cost and improve the extraction rate. In order to reduce energy consumption, save cost and increase extraction rate.

Common types of industrial gases

Oxygen gas

Oxygen is a chemical element with the chemical symbol O and atomic number 8, belonging to one of the oxygen group elements. At room temperature and pressure, oxygen is a colorless and odorless gas, and one of the most abundant and widely distributed elements on earth, accounting for about 48.6% of the mass of the earth’s crust, and one of the important components of the earth’s atmosphere, accounting for about 20.95% of the total volume of the atmosphere.

Nitrogen Gas

Nitrogen at room temperature and pressure is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas, the density of nitrogen is lower than air, the gas has a high degree of chemical stability, it is not easy to chemical reaction with other substances, nitrogen is the highest content of the earth’s atmosphere of the gas, the volume fraction of about 78.09%, accounting for the majority of the total amount of the atmosphere.

Acetylene Gas

Acetylene is a highly flammable product and the hottest and most efficient fuel gas available. It provides reliable localized heating with minimal heat waste, resulting in high productivity and extremely high flame temperatures, with pure acetylene burning at temperatures of up to about 2,100 degrees in air and up to 3,600 degrees in oxygen. These properties make acetylene valuable for a wide range of applications in industrial production and scientific research.

Argon Gas

Argon is a colorless, tasteless, odorless noble gas, also monoatomic molecules, in the earth’s atmosphere is more abundant, accounting for about 1.3% of the atmosphere. Argon is abundant in nature, but because of its stable nature, it is not easy to have chemical reactions with other substances, so it is difficult to be produced by chemical methods, and the industry mainly obtains argon from air separation.

Helium Gas

Helium is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas in its standard state and the second most abundant element in the universe, but is found in relatively low amounts in the Earth’s atmosphere. Helium has a very low density and is lighter than air, which makes it uniquely suited for certain applications, such as as a flotation gas. Helium is an inert gas that is chemically extremely inactive. This is mainly due to the fact that helium atoms have a very stable electron arrangement and do not easily lose or gain electrons, so they do not readily form chemical bonds and do not react with other elements or compounds.

Propane Gas

Propane is a colorless, flammable, slightly water-soluble liquefied gas with a distinctive odor. Propane is relatively chemically stable and does not readily react chemically. It is a cost-effective fuel for processes that do not require high-quality weld cutting.

How Are Industrial Gases Used?

Steel and Metalworking Industry

Oxygen: Industrial oxygen Large scale use in metallurgy, smelting, steel – making to optimize processes and improve product quality.

Acetylene: Acts as a protective gas in metallurgy, acetylene mixed with oxygen for high – temperature metal cutting and welding.

Argon: Argon prevents oxidation in steel making and creates an inert atmosphere in aluminum manufacturing. And argon Serves as a shielding gas in argon arc welding.

Helium: Helium used as a protective gas in welding to avoid metal oxidation at high temperatures.

Electronic and Semiconductor Industry

Nitrogen: High – purity nitrogen acts as a carrier, inert protective, and encapsulation gas in chip and integrated circuit manufacturing.

Acetylene: High – purity acetylene (≥99.5%) is applied in microelectronics, chemical vapor deposition, and solar cells to avoid semiconductor pollution.

Argon: Provides a protective atmosphere and heat transfer for ultra – pure semiconductor crystals (germanium, silicon).

Helium: Helium used in fiber optics and semiconductor manufacturing; cools nuclear reactors and extracts nuclear fuel in the nuclear industry; applied in superconductivity.

Healthcare and Scientific Research

Oxygen: Oxygen supplies respiration in hypoxic environments (scuba diving, mountaineering, high – altitude flight, cosmic voyage, medical rescue).

Nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen cools “cold knives” for low – bleeding surgery; serves as a cold source for cold traps, cold pumps, and low – temperature superconductors.

Helium: Helium used in precision instruments (spectral analysis, mass spectrometers) to study matter’s micro – structure; applied in refrigeration.

Food and Refrigeration Industry

Nitrogen: Acts as a protective gas to extend food shelf life, liquid nitrogen fastly freezes seafood/meat for freshness.

Oxygen: Oxygen used in waste water and exhaust gas treatment to enhance environmental governance efficiency.

Propane: Propane functions as a refrigerant in the refrigeration industry due to its low boiling point.

Energy Industry

Propane: Serves as a clean fuel for internal combustion engines (automobiles, generators, gas grills); acts as a raw material for organic synthesis to produce chemicals.

Acetylene: A monomer for synthesizing rubber, synthetic fibers, plastics; used to make acetaldehyde, acetic acid, pharmaceuticals, and spices.
